Steiglitz is a small town in Victoria, 92 kilometres (57 mi) west of the state capital, Melbourne, Australia, in the Brisbane Ranges. In the early 1850s gold was found near the town, and as a consequence it grew on land belonging to pastoralists from the von Stieglitz family. Following the decline of the Australian gold rushes in the late 1870s the town declined. The last gold mine in the town closed in 1941; the population as of 2006 is less than 100. The Steiglitz Post Office's history closely follows the town's history: it opened on 15 March 1856 and closed in 1966.[1]
